The Binding Of Isaac Repentance: Every Major Difference (2023)

The Binding of Isaac has come a long way since its initial release in 2011. Edmund McMillan's scatological odyssey recently received a sequel-sized DLC introducing new content and rebalancing most of the existing items in the game. The Binding of Isaac: Repentance will challenge newcomers and veterans of the series alike, as they experiment with new items and trinkets to overcome the fresh horrors that lurk below Isaac's basement.

Previously reliable combinations of items will not work in this DLC, as certain objects that were once game-breaking have been toned down, with others receiving sizablebuffs. While some fans have complained that it isn't as easy to get overpowered in Repentance, others have embraced its differences and have already begun trying to find new powerful combinations and synergies

9 Clearer HUD Layout

The Binding Of Isaac Repentance: Every Major Difference (1)

The found HUD displaying Isaac's stats was introduced in the Afterbirth DLC but was somewhat counterintuitive. Shot Speed, for example, was shown in frames between tears which meant that Isaac's tears became less frequent as the number increased. The HUD in Repentance is more customizable and much better at telling the player everything they need to know.

Shot Speed is now shown in tears per second, and range is displayed in the number of tiles over which tears will be effective. As well as making the HUD easier to understand, there are also new HUD elements such as the mini option for the item tracker to show more items at once. The angel and devil chances have also been tweaked. Where the percentages used to tell the player the chance of one room switching to the other, they now show the percentage chance of a given room spawning.

8 Piercing Weapons Only Work Against Multiple Enemies

The Binding Of Isaac Repentance: Every Major Difference (2)

The Binding of Isaac is a game renowned for its peculiar enemies and weird boss fights. Some bosses such as Larry Jr, Chub, and Pin are composed of multiple sections. Segmented enemies used to be vulnerable to piercing weapons like Mom's knife as they could hit all of the segments at once, dealing massive damage.

The latest update makes all composite enemies count as a single monster, which means piercing weapons can only hit them once. Furthermore, fire pits, TNT barrels, and all invincible stone enemies now count as obstacles, meaning that spectral shots can still pass through them but piercing shots will be blocked.

7 Players Can Now Collect Duplicates Of The Same Trinket

The Binding Of Isaac Repentance: Every Major Difference (3)

There have been a number of tweaks to the item menu in Repentance. The list now includes multiples of the same treasure and any objects that have been smelted or gulped. This is a relatively minor change but will be great for players who like to keep track of the various trinkets and oddities they find in the procedurally generated dungeons.

As well as tweaking the item list, players can not only collect multiples of the same item but also trinkets. The effects of duplicated trinkets now stack, allowing players to create even more devastating effects. The rules behind finding trinkets and items have also been altered, with some drops being more likely and others rarer than they were previously. Any treasure seen in the shop is now less likely to spawn again, incentivizing players to think twice before refusinga purchase.

6 Minibosses Are More Structured

The Binding Of Isaac Repentance: Every Major Difference (4)

As well as over 25 new bosses for players to encounter, the Repentance DLC also rebalances the game's existing bosses and minibosses. Small boss rooms and small miniboss rooms have been disabled, meaning that the player will always have at least a standard room size for strafing and dodging attacks.

Related:The 10 Best Survival Games Of The Decade (According To Metacritic)

Minibosses are surprise fights that always occur in unmarked rooms against one of the seven deadly sins. These fights vary in difficulty but in Repentance, players will no longer find the super sins during the early chapters.Furthermore, pits that areadjacent to thetrap door at the end of a boss room are now automatically filled in, preventing the entrance to the next level from blocking off angel or devil rooms.

5 Enemies Now Die Upon Reaching Zero Health

The Binding Of Isaac Repentance: Every Major Difference (5)

During his descent into the subterranean hellscape beneath his cellar, Isaac encounters insects, mutilated abominations, fecal monsters, and possibly one of the worst mothers in gaming history. Previously it was the case that enemies would only die upon reaching negative HP, which led to rare but frustrating occasions when a monster with zero health could still attack.

Now with the updated spider mod item, players can see an enemy's HP displayed below them with a color-coded health bar. Using this item, players have discovered that all monsters and bosses now die upon reaching zero. This is a small change that makes a big difference, considering many items are now weaker than they once were.

4 Challenge Rooms Are More Random

The Binding Of Isaac Repentance: Every Major Difference (6)

Challenge rooms are only open to the player as long as their health is equal to or above their number of heart containers. These rooms always include chests which when opened will spawn three waves of enemies that Isaac must defeat to leave the room.

While the monsters in challenge rooms used to be somewhat related to their respective floors, in Repentance the waves of enemies are more randomized. Monsters from various different levels have the chance to spawn and there are even new, unique waves for each floor. Like any good survival game, the rewards gained from challenge rooms can be both very strong or somewhat underwhelming and with more varied waves of monsters, players may think twice before entering them in this new DLC.

3 Co-op Mode Is Now Much Better

The Binding Of Isaac Repentance: Every Major Difference (7)

The multiplayer mode added in the Rebirth expansion was somewhat lackluster, as the other players could only control ghosts. This allowed them to move and fire at enemies but only player 1 could pick up items and collect trinkets.

Related:The Binding of Isaac: Repentance - How To Unlock And Find The Planetarium

Repentance adds a fully functioning 4 player co-op mode that allows each user to control their own character. Bosses and minibosses will now drop more items depending on how many players there are. Playing The Binding Of Isaac with friends is a good way to tackle the game's challenges and with each character now able to stack their own buffs, a group of well-coordinated players could feasibly take on the game's final boss.

2 New Floors For Greed And Greedier Mode

The Binding Of Isaac Repentance: Every Major Difference (8)

What makes The Binding of Isaac such an exemplary permadeath game is its simple mechanics combined with the natural complexity of its numerous items and trinkets. Greed mode takes this even further by placing the player in a single room surrounded by a shop, two treasure rooms, and a secret room. Players can summon waves of monsters by pressing a button in the middle of the main room. Enemies in greed mode will only drop coins, making the shops and treasure rooms the only way of obtaining new items. Greedier mode is a similar layout with even tougher and more frequent waves of enemies.

The Repentance DLC adds new alternate floors for the Greed and Greedier modes, including the burning basement and necropolis. These new floor patterns help to further differentiate these special challenge modes from the main game.

1 Some Items Have Gotten Worse But Others Are Much Better

The Binding Of Isaac Repentance: Every Major Difference (9)

Veterans of The Binding of Issac won't be able to rely on their previous, game-breaking builds in Repentance. Along with two new playable characters, Bethany and the twins Jacob and Esau, numerous objects in the game now have wildly different stats.

Mom's knife is an example of a weapon that is still strong but not as overpowered as it once was. The knife is now easier to fire diagonally but its range has been significantly reduced and it no longer gets bonus damage from charging. On the other hand, bombs now deal 100 hundred damage instead of 60 and the notched axe is a much more useful item as it can be used throughout a floor instead of in a single room.
